Joan M. (Hanifan) Murphy, 86, died on Friday, June 9, 2017 at her home. She is the beloved wife of James Murphy, mother of Michael Murphy, Carol Flanagan and her husband Michael, the late Larry Murphy and the late Bobby Murphy. Grandmother of Erin, Patrick and Kelli Flanagan and Katelyn, Catherine and Michael Murphy. Sister of Robert Hanifan and the late Charles and Donald Hanifan.
Joan grew up in Malden and was a graduate of Cheverus High School. She worked for the City of Malden in the Engineering Department before retiring. Upon retiring she was able to spend 25 winters vacationing in Florida and celebrating St Patrick's Day with some very special people. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all. She was a special person with a smile that would light up a room as soon as she walked in. Social events and spending time with family and friends brought so much happiness to Joan. She loved to play cards with her grandchildren and was truly a "fashionista" who enjoyed shopping at her favorite store Chico's. She will truly be missed by all.

Joan Murphy was one of the most loving human beings I have been blessed to have known. She was genuine, honest, funny, beautiful, social, and a Happy Lady with a Memorable Smile. She always saw the best in people and knew when to offer good advise to those in need. I will truly miss her presence at family gatherings because she always lit up any room and I always looked forward to spending time with her. Will miss you dearly.

Heaven is a little bit brighter with Aunt Joan there, she always lit up the room with her very contagious smile. No matter how bad you felt when she gifted you with her smile it made you feel a little bit better. We will be at a loss without her presence and we will be a in the dark for awhile. Aunt Joan will be greatly missed by all she knew. I always loved the way she said my name
I always loved the way she said my name Jeannie, Jeannie always twice and her arms open for one of the best hugs you could ever get. Always on my mind and forever in my heart.
