I was thirteen years old when I first met you; a towering, commanding authority figure. I admit you were an intimidating presence to a shy, somewhat introverted teen. But as the years passed, I grew to know the kind and loving man behind the bravado. That's not to say that your strength and influence were in any way diminished by your openness and warmth. Quite the opposite. I thank you for always making me feel welcome as part of your extended family.
It was through observing the dynamics of how you presided over your family that I learned it was possible for people who love one another to disagree, sometimes loudly, and not have it result in a grudge or lingering hurt feelings. You provided a safe space for people to express themselves and grow, with one caveat: you'd better be prepared to defend your position. I thank you for challenging me to expand my mind and encourage a passion for knowledge as I was a late bloomer in that regard.
When I became a writer you were one of my biggest fans. I treasured your feedback more than you will ever know. I saved many of our email exchanges and will always remember how you typed--unintentionallyin all capital letters. It sounded just like you.
So many memories. The Annual Thanksgiving Trivial Pursuit Battle Of The Sexes. That drive up to Saint Joe's in a blizzard. The Stoneham-Reading football games (What a crowd!). Movies at the Kendall Square Cinema. History lessons at the foot of Mr Fio. Movie and sports debates. The Three Stooges. And in recent years, our annual celebration of Nick and Lindsay's birthdays on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
Thank you for your friendship. And thank you for being such a wonderful father to my best friend. It has truly been a pleasure to have known you.

I was saddened to read of Mike's passing. We worked together for many years in the Title I department. I have many memories of shared work experiences and Mike's great contributions to the joint efforts to deliver services to the children of BPS. His larger than life personality, booming laugh and ever present cigar are fondly remembered. He took great pride in his family and all you accomplishments. I remain in awe of his drives to St Joe's after work to watch young Michael play. What a dad!
May our loving God grant you all peace after you loss

My sincere condolences to the Fiorillo family. I worked with Mike towards the end of his career with the Boston Public Schools and always enjoyed his stories and photos of his children and their accomplishments. He had a great sense of humor, a strong work ethic and always wanted the best for the BPS students. When I think of Mike, I smile. He was a great guy. May your wonderful memories bring you comfort during this difficult time.
