Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Alice by adding your memories and photos.

Alice R. (Reardon) Modica of Wakefield, formerly of Reading and North Reading, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at Melrose Wakefield Hospital. She was 93 years of age.

Born on January 10, 1927 in Wakefield, Alice is the loving daughter of the late Daniel Reardon and Gladys (Surette) Reardon; is the beloved wife of Michael Modica and sister to the late Elinor Biddiscombe. She is the devoted mother of Ellen J. Howland and her husband Ron Howland, Beth A. Modica and her husband David Hickernell and Michael T. Modica. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Justin Howland (Nemessis),Ben Howland (Lauren) and Andrew Hickernell (Felicia); five great grandchildren (Joey, Evan Aaliyah, Sophia and Audrey); and several nieces and nephews.

Alice graduated from Reading High School, and, in addition to raising her three children, went on to a long career as an executive secretary. Alice was always fearless to take on new challenges and experiences, even in her later years, whether it was horseback riding in the Cascades, helmet diving in Bermuda or sliding down a mountain in New Hampshire with her grandsons. One of her fondest memories was traveling to Scotland for grandson Ben's college graduation and tirelessly hiking through several Scottish cities. Alice was eighty at the time and amazed all of us with her stamina. She was an avid tournament bridge player, a volunteer at the Winchester Hospital and an active member and volunteer of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reading. She and Mike were fortunate to enjoy a long retirement filled with travel, family and many friends.

At the request of Alice's family, all funeral services are private. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Condolence & Memory Journal

I remember Alice so fondly from her days volunteering at Winchester Hospital. Every time the volunteers were asked to do a big mailing, I would show them the "tricks of the trade" I learned from Alice to make the whole process more efficient and speedy. And I would give her the credit and speak pf her every time. She was kind to all in her role as a Messenger volunteer - it was a pleasure to know her. Marie Johnson

I was so sad to hear that Alice passed away. She was such a good friend to my mother, Maxine Iversen. It was so nice when I would occasionally run into Alice and catch up. Linell Iversen Nester

Seeing Alice's name and picture brought an immediate smile to my face. Almost 50 years ago, I was straight out of college, and waiting to get a teaching assignment. Meanwhile I was working at Winchester Hospital. Alice was warm, kind, delightful, patient, and encouraging. I so enjoyed our chats. She will be remembered fondly, and thinking of her will always bring a smile to my heart.
Happy trails, Alice ~

Barbara and I will miss Alice's company at UUCR on Sundays, where we always looked forward to presence.

I met Alice and Mike 10 years ago when I joined the a local chapter of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). At that time they both worked tirelessly as President and Vice-President of the North Reading Chapter 479. I had the pleasure of spending time with them socially. Alice was very proud of her family and spoke of them fondly. My condolences to all her family members. Rest In Peace.
