Beloved Coach, Family Man, Friend and Athlete

Obituary

William F. Tighe, Jr., 95, beloved husband of the late Mary (Folger) Tighe, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Born in Ashland, he is the loving son of the late William and Agnes (Anderson) Tighe.

Affectionately known as Bill or Coach, he grew up in Ashland and was a graduate of Ashland High School. During his high school years, Bill was a talented athlete and excelled in football, baseball and basketball. When he graduated high school, Bill joined the United States Army during WWII. After he served his country, Bill continued his education at Boston University on a football scholarship and was an exceptional athlete. He earned a spot in the Boston University Baseball and Football Hall of Fame.

He began his coaching career in Wakefield. One of Bill's proudest moments was in 1962, when the Wakefield Football team won the state championships and President John F. Kennedy came to meet them. After Wakefield, Coach Tighe moved on to Malden and then to Lexington as head football coach. In each instance he was known as a coach who could add a winning attitude to a football program. Tighe is a past president of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association and a member of its Hall of Fame. He has received many other accolades, including the New England Football Officials Memorial Award and the National Federation of State High School Associations Service Award.

Bill's family was his greatest joy. He was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather, a cherished father-in-law, brother and dear friend to many. He will be truly missed by the many lives he touched and by his loving family.

Bill was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Folger) Tighe. Devoted father of Sharon Adamo and her husband Frank, Maureen Martens and her husband Remy, Kevin Tighe and his wife Elaine, Steven Tighe and his wife Gina and the late Michael and Billy Tighe. Cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Loving brother of Edward Tighe and the late Dorothy Holmes and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
